Employees First, Customers Second. Seriously.

Shawn and I have had a tremendous first week with this new blog – we thank you all for checking it out and for spreading the word among your network. With no advanced fan fair whatsoever, this site has eclipsed the readership of both of our individual blogs. Score one for synergy!

Here are a couple of spots we’ve posted or been mentioned this week in addition to Switch and Shift. We hope you check them out.

Sustainable Success: Turning Management Upside Down and Employee First on the Sustainable Business Forum. Every other Friday I contribute an exclusive post to this community’s blog for my Sustainable Leadership column. My latest post discusses HCL Technologies and the remarkable cultural transformation driven by CEO and vice chairman Vineet Nayar. If you’re serious about learning a better way to do things, I wrote this post for you.

Respect Yourself First is a guest-post I contributed to Millennial blogger and Marketing Optimist Donna Queza. Donna is a dynamo, and when she asked if she could repost something I wrote for my popular “Reinventing You” series, I was only too happy to oblige. I love Donna’s blog – check it out and you will, too.

The Leadership Love-In, by retired CEO John Bell, is nothing short of humbling. In this brief post, he introduces readers to eight of his favorite bloggers – including me. To be publicly recognized by such an enlightened enterprise leader as John is, well, it’s terrific validation for my life’s work. To be included among this list of stars is more than I could ask. You’re going to love John’s blog, CEO Afterlife. I hope you visit back often. I will!

My Job Is To Make Your Job Easier. More often than not, when my writing inspires a reader to post on his/her own site, it’s a rant against what I write – which is great, because I often learn a lot from these posts, and I’ve even picked up a few friends along the way. But this week showed me something far less usual: my post,

The Law of The Umbrella, inspired another business leader to write his own post spring boarding off mine. It’s great to identify and bond with other 21st Century Leaders such as Peter Borner. When you visit his site, reach out to say hi in the comments.

Switch and Shift: A Better Way to Manage: Leadership in the 21st century is shaped by events never before seen in organizational history. A groundswell is deepening to lead with a people first philosophy. We’re all in need of hope, inspiration. Why not create that where we work?

5 Workplace Buzz Kills: This was the top blog post for Shawn’s former blog. In it he highlights five issues within a company that deplete meaning from work and are associated with low engagement and dissatisfaction. When you can label something, it makes it real. The five labels in this post can help you see if they are present in your company or team. The key, of course, is to act.

As I said, not bad for our first week. How’s your 2012 going so far? Let us know in the comments!

Way to go, guys! Keep it up! Need a dad writer partner? (just kidding)

Thanks Bruce! Your area of focus may be a little off-topic for this leadership & management blog, but we’ll (*ehem*) give it some thought. (LOL). In all seriousness, we love your ongoing engagement and support, and I personally want to add this: a leader needs balance. To be a great leader but a lackluster parent… true success will elude you every time. Family first, career a close second. Never the opposite!

Firstly, thanks for including ‘The Leadership Love-in’ in your post. Secondly, I’ve always loved the ethic of employees first. However, for those not aware of the complete circle, it is this: Employees first, Customers second, Shareholders third – the theory being that satisfied employees make satisfied customers and satisfied customers make satisfied shareholders. It works, but in my experience, this was never an easy sell to the Board of Directors.

John, you’re so right! Exploring this topic is a bit much for the short-and-sweet venue of a blog; it’s a major section of a book, at least. I’ll be addressing that in my next book, which I’m in the midst of writing right now.

For a shorter wait, I can’t recommend Nayar’s book enough – it’s one of my all-time favorites! Can a publicly-traded company get away with prioritizing its employees first, its customers second, and its shareholders last, as you describe? Fortunately, HCL does just that – and it is eating its competition’s lunch! I hope you and our other readers get a chance to read “Employees First, Customers Second.” You’ll thank me.
