How Big is Your Brave?


There is no doubt bravery is needed to lead and succeed.

Since the beginning of time, bravery has been a crucible of leadership and an essential trait in battle of any kind.

Let’s explore bravery through these three genius questions:

I asked my network to answer these questions, to help you put these elusive concepts of leadership and learning into place, both for you and for those you seek to lead and serve.

Here is a sampling of the responses:

Kindergarteners always answer my questions better than any adults do.

A class from Coppell, Texas told me that this is what brave looks like, and how it acts and behave:

  • When you love who you are.
  • When you can be calm in yourself.
  • If you stand up for yourself.
  • When you believe in your self, you are a super hero.

Learning Architect Dawn Crawford declared that Lizzie Velasquez is what brave looks like and acts. Lizzie certainly crushes all the criteria laid down by our kindergarteners.

Kindergarten teacher Matt Gomez told me that “Being Brave” is the only rule in his kindergarten class.

Answers to “How Big is Your Brave?”

From leadership blogger Daniel Buhr:  “My brave is bigger than my fears, so the bigger the fears I face, the bigger my brave.“

From District Technology Coordinator James Gubbins: “As big as my network! Being connected to so many amazing people is what allows me to succeed when I do and cushions me when I fail!”

From Joli-Barker Erwin, lead learner in the Fearless Classroom: “I would like to think that my best feature is my passion for educating kids and creating fearless thinkers and compassionate young people.  My BRAVE is LARGE and abundant because being fearless has led me to some extraordinary experiences so far!”

I am strong and courageous.  My brave is my song.

From the third-grade geniuses in the Fearless Classroom:

Abby: “My brave is not that big.  Sure I can speak to people from other countries and classes and even give speeches in front of my own friends, but I also have a hard time being brave enough to really put myself out there and take risks when it comes to my work.  Being fearless is tough sometimes.  I still get scared, but when I decide to push through it I always end up feeling a little braver than before.”

Valerie: “After hearing our discussions about it being okay to celebrate what makes us special, now I feel special and I don’t think I will let people make me feel bad anymore.  I think my brave is growing.”

Eleasiah: “My bravery is really big because I am fearless.  Not fearless as in having no fears, just fearless in that I don’t let fears stop me.”

Ava: “I think I am brave because I stand up for myself and my friends.  I have been brave for the past two years in class because I have had to work really hard and sometimes it wasn’t easy at all.  I am brave when I go on stage to sing in front of a lot of people.  I am strong and courageous.  My brave is my song.”
