New Era, New Expectations: The Rise of Social Leadership

This past Monday, over 200 social leaders – Blue Unicorns, we call them – gathered on Twitter to take part in our first-ever #SocialLeader chat. The result? Fun. Inspiration. Education. Sarcasm. Enlightenment. Empathy. Debate. Respect. A troll with a sense of humor. A community with a sense of urgency. A cliché or two. A few buzzwords. And certainly a number of raised eyebrows, nodding heads and Ah-ha moments. And that was just in the first 15 minutes! In the end, we came to several conclusions:

  • Social leadership is more than a buzzword… it’s a new way of leading, inspiring and innovating
  • Blue Unicorns, it seems, do have certain traits like being willing to listen more than talk, to engage with all stakeholders and to share knowledge
  • Today, “social” is not a about a specific tool or technology, but a mindset; it’s how we collaborate, communicate and, ultimately, compete in our respective markets
  • That a brand new Twitter chat, on its very first night, can trend in the No. 3 spot nationwide on Twitter!

Most important, we agreed that we need more social leaders. We need more Blue Unicorns. And we’re all willing to work hard to make that happen, as is demonstrated in the recap below…

Our topic is sure to raise more eyebrows and stir a lively debate:

“Is the Social Age Killing Top Down Leadership?”

There’s a more human way to do business.

In the Social Age, it’s how we engage with customers, collaborators and strategic partners that matters; it’s how we create workplace optimism that sets us apart; it’s how we recruit, retain (and repel) employees that becomes our differentiator. This isn’t a “people first, profits second” movement, but a “profits as a direct result of putting people first” movement.
