#SocialLeader Chat: Is the Social Age Killing Top Down Leadership?

Monday evening, we’ll take on an important topic to social leaders, regardless of title, education or experience level: “Is the Social Age Killing Top Down Leadership?”

In the past, and certainly in the Industrial Age, it seemed big change could only come from a top-down mandate. Today, we’re seeing examples of how a single act, stance or tweet can affect the fortune of an entire company. Target Corporation, which has seen both the negative (a revolt against Black Friday creep) and positive (the “clip-on tie” experience) aspects of employees leading without a title… or permission.

And isn’t that the epitome of “social leadership”? To lead without the right title on a business card? Or the responsibility?

Here are some themes we’ll be exploring:

  • Will a change in where leadership comes from alter business as we know it?
  • Is the balance of power flipped when the lowest tier on the payroll can affect real change?
  • Does the Social Age mean executives will become active listeners and stewards of culture; in effect, become Chief Facilitation Officers?
