Why Community Building Is Vital for Business
Tim McDonald, Huffington Post’s Director of Community, sheds light on the important role of community managers, the skills of a community manager, and why communities are not networks. Communities require care and thoughtfulness. It’s a relationship that cannot be neglected if a business wants to remain relevant in a social world.
For any of us to do work that matters, we must feel a sense of belonging. Community provides the safety and comfort associated with belonging. Community Managers are entrusted to create the sense of belonging, safety and comfort for the communities they shepard. Though it’s not entirely their responsibility for these community characteristics, it’s up to the Community Manager to model what is important to theand to the brand.
If you want to do work that matters, you need to know how to grow a community of advocates for your business, your team or your cause.
To Quote Tim McDonald
- “Community Managers are the voice of the brand to the community, and the voice of the community to the brand.”
- “When growing your community, you always need to look outside your community. You can never grow from just staying within where you’re at.”
- “You need to start understanding what your community is looking for. What is important to them. Why are they there.”
- “What you really want to do is you want to start thinking more like a publisher, thinking about what message, what story is going to resonate with my audience, with my community.”
