Why Your Dark Side is Important to Get the Most Out of Life with @ToddKashdan

Happiness in the workplace is a hot topic right now. In large part because businesses have not created the conditions to help employees do their best work.

While happiness, or other positive states, is important, it’s only part of the equation for success. Psychologist and scientist Todd Kashdan has researched the benefits of the dark sides of our moods and personalities. Todd believes we need to tap into both our positive and dark side to drive success and achieve greater fulfillment. It’s a compelling point.

Together with Robert Biswas-Diener, Todd explores in The Upside of Your Dark Side a variety of “dark side” moods and emotions that we typically hide in our personal and professional relationships. I was really intrigued by the notion of expressing anger at work. Here in the United States, this emotion is often considered inappropriate. Be sure to listen to what Todd has to say about the time and place for anger expressed at work.

There’s a more human way to do business.

In the Social Age, it’s how we engage with customers, collaborators and strategic partners that matters; it’s how we create workplace optimism that sets us apart; it’s how we recruit, retain (and repel) employees that becomes our differentiator. This isn’t a “people first, profits second” movement, but a “profits as a direct result of putting people first” movement.
